Men for Nonviolence is a program that helps men learn to
express themselves without violence and to end their use of violence against
women, children, and other men. We believe that rape, battery, pornography,
racism, militarism, and homophobia are forms of violence that occur primarily
because men are trained to dominate others. A man’s life can be difficult or
painful because of the violence he inflicts on people. Abuse is an intentional
act used to gain power and control over another person. Violence is never an
isolated behavior. This program is conducted by women and men who believe in the
power and hope of nonviolent social change. [top]

1. Battery is a crime and consequently falls under the
jurisdiction of the criminal justice system.
2. Abusive behavior is learned behavior that is under the control of the person doing the abuse. Constructive
alternatives to violence can be learned.
3. Abuse is not a “mental illness.” In fact, abuse is
often approved by our culture. It is each person’s responsibility to examine
these values and reject them for our own lives. We encourage treatment for mental illness,
childhood trauma and addictions in addition to nonviolence training.
4. Abuse is not the result of “losing control,” but
rather, a strategy for maintaining control. The abuser is always responsible;
the “fault” can never be laid elsewhere, especially not on the victim.
5. The primary goal for this program is to stop the abuse
and provide safety for the partner and the children. [top]
